The City of Coos Bay is excited to announce the installation of the first phase of the Boardwalk Interpretive Sign Project, a collaborative effort that brings new depth and meaning to one of our community’s most cherished spaces.
This project is a partnership between the City of Coos Bay, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, the Coquille Indian Tribe, and the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua & Siuslaw Indians, with generous funding provided by Travel Oregon.
Phase One includes the installation of five interpretive signs that celebrate the identity and heritage of the Coos Bay area. These signs explore the following themes:
- Community & Geography
- Ship Building and Shipping
- Fishing
- Forestry and Timber
- Coal Mining
Each sign has been thoughtfully designed to be both educational and inclusive. A special feature of this project is the inclusion of Braille text and QR codes linking to audio recordings of the content. These recordings feature a beautiful mixture of voices from the community, and we are deeply grateful to all who contributed their stories and time to help bring these signs to life.

Within just an hour of installation, groups of people enjoying the beautiful day on the Boardwalk were already stopping to read the signs, listen to the audio, and take in the stories they tell—a heartening reminder of the power of public space and shared history.
Looking ahead, Phase Two of the project will feature interpretive signs created by our three Tribal partners. These signs will highlight each Tribe’s unique story, language, and cultural connection to this land and water. We anticipate the installation of these signs by early September.
We are thrilled by the opportunity this Travel Oregon grant has provided to enhance the Boardwalk experience for both residents and visitors. These interpretive signs will deepen understanding, foster connection, and celebrate the rich cultural and historical fabric of Coos Bay.
Stay tuned for more updates as this meaningful project continues to unfold!
