At the September 2, 2025, Council meeting, the City of Coos Bay unanimously adopted a proclamation recognizing September as National Preparedness Month. The proclamation was read by Coos Bay Fire Chief Jeff Adkins. This year’s national theme, “Preparedness Starts at Home,” emphasizes the importance of households taking action by creating emergency plans, assembling supply kits, and connecting with neighbors. Oregon’s theme, “Plan Today. Ready Tomorrow.” highlights the unique risks facing our region, including earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, flooding, and severe weather. The Oregon Office of Emergency Management also promotes the “2-Weeks Ready” campaign, which encourages residents to be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least two weeks following a major disaster—recognizing that outside help may be delayed. Locally, Coos Bay Fire & Rescue supports these efforts by planning to assist citizens with food, shelter, and essential needs in an emergency, while also sharing preparedness resources through social media and the City’s Friday Update. By declaring September as National Preparedness Month, the City affirms its commitment to public education, community readiness, and resilience.
