Police Organization & Staff

The Coos Bay Police Department staff currently consists of the Chief of Police, two Captains, four Patrol Sergeants, twelve Patrol Officers, two Criminal Detectives, one School Resource Officer, one Community Resource Officer, and one Community Service Officer. The Communications Unit is comprised of one Communications Administrator, two Dispatch Supervisors and seventeen Dispatchers. Support staff includes one Records Supervisor, two Records Specialists, one part-time Evidence Custodian, and numerous volunteers.

The Criminal Detectives handle major crime investigations and are members of the Coos County Major Incident Team.

The Patrol Unit provides emergency response throughout the city 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These officers are divided into four platoons and provide traditional police duties, as well as crime prevention and community problem solving services.

The School Resource Officer is assigned to work in the schools of the Coos Bay School District. The Community Resource Officer works primarily with our unsheltered population to assist them in finding resources to help them locate permanent housing and gain stability.  The Community Service Officer provides Codes enforcement and works toward compliance throughout the City of Coos Bay.

The Communications Center provides police, fire and emergency medical dispatching for the entire Coos County police and fire agencies, as well as dispatching services for Coquille Tribal Police, Confederate Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and the Siuslaw Indians, and Southwestern Oregon Community College campus security.

The Records Unit provides state and federal mandated archival record keeping duties, statistical analysis and dissemination of information. Staff assigned to Support Services works closely with the Courts, District Attorney’s Office and other law enforcement and public agencies to ensure information is collected and disseminated in accordance with State statutory requirements.

The Department’s Volunteer Group is made up of Reserve Police Officers and civilian volunteers. Typical duties range from working with sworn Police Officers on patrol to enforcing disabled parking rules and regulations, enforcing special parking districts throughout the City and through a cooperative agreement in the City of North Bend.

Our agency continuously reviews the way we deploy resources to increase our ability to respond to community needs and advance the use of technology to enhance our efficiency and effectiveness. However, technology can never replace the value that you, as citizens, have in sharing information with your local law enforcement officers.

Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

Mayor's Message

Post Date:01/09/2026

Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

Today, January 9, we pause to recognize and celebrate Law Enforcement Appreciation Day — a moment to say thank you to the men and women who serve our community with professionalism, courage, and care.

The Coos Bay Police Department’s guiding values — Honor, Integrity, Excellence, and Teamwork — are more than words. They are reflected daily in how officers serve the public, support one another, and engage with the community. These values shape the department’s mission to efficiently provide quality law enforcement services by promoting a safe environment through a strong police-citizen partnership, with an emphasis on mutual trust, integrity, fairness, and professionalism.

Every day, officers and professional staff respond to emergencies, help people through moments of crisis, build relationships with residents and businesses, and work behind the scenes to keep our community safe and connected. Much of this work happens quietly, without recognition, and often under challenging and unpredictable circumstances.

We are fortunate to have a department that is not only committed to public safety, but also deeply invested in the well-being of our community. The people who serve in law enforcement are also neighbors, volunteers, coaches, and family members who care about this place and the people who call it home.

On this Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, we extend our sincere thanks to the Coos Bay Police Department and to law enforcement professionals everywhere for their dedication, service, and commitment to our community.

-Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay
