The historic log cabin hosts community events and is available for private rentals

The Mingus Park Community Building (MPCB), formerly known as the Historic Works Progress Administration Scout Cabin, is a rustic historic log cabin made of local Douglas Fir located at 850 W Park Roadway on the northern edge of the 55-acre Mingus Park. It has been the location of many special celebrations and events since it was completed in July of 1940. The structure was built with WPA labor, local planning and funding support from the Boy Scouts of America Council, many local individuals and civic organizations as well as the City of Marshfield (now Coos Bay). The cabin is officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places as of May 16, 2025.

The MPCB is the home base for many local scout meetings within the Chinook-Wacoma District of the Oregon Trail Council of Scouts BSA. The building is also available for private rentals and community events. To rent the building, submit a Mingus Park Community Building Rental Permit and Mingus Park Map - Community Building to the Public Works Department. An Outlook calendar shows the cabin's availability; please contact the Public Works Department to reserve the cabin for an event.

The City of Coos Bay Parks Commission and Adopt a Park Pilot Program identified rehabilitation and repair of this structure as one of the priorities for the Adopt A Park Pilot Program. The program was approved by the commission in a public meeting held on June 15, 2023, and had an official kick off in October of 2023 at the cabin. Many repairs have been completed the past few years and more significant projects are planned. For ways to volunteer with Adopt A Park Pilot Programs, contact adoptapark@coosbayor.gov.

The #1 destructive force on this cabin over the past 84 years remains vandalism. The City of Coos Bay can’t address issues if they don’t know about it. If you “See Something - Say Something” by contacting Coos Bay Police Department Non-Emergency Dispatch 541-269-8911 or e-mail administration@coosbayor.gov
